Teach Out Plan Brief

Posted on April 16, 2024

Teach out plans have been developed and submitted to UNCG for curriculum review. In this brief, timelines for program discontinuation are provided. Working group team members collaborated with program leads and academic advisors to draft individual plans of study for all students in the affected programs. These plans specify the courses students need and the timeline for completion of each course. Students who have challenges in completing courses on time will be assisted in every way practicable.

  1. Summary and Overview
On February 1, Chancellor Gilliam announced discontinuations of programs at the undergraduate, Master’s and Doctoral levels. Provost Storrs tasked Andrew Hamilton, Associate Vice Provost and Dean of Undergraduate Studies, to lead the teach-out process. Provost Storrs set a deadline on April 1, 2024 to submit program-closure documents to UNCG, the UNC System, and SACSCOC. Dean Hamilton worked closely with Dean Greg Bell of the Graduate School and the deans of the affected colleges to recruit a working group that would see the submission process through to completion. The working group has taken great care to ensure that students in discontinued programs have the classes and support they need to finish in a timely way. Students in these programs were directly notified of program closure first by Deans Hamilton and Bell, and then by leadership in their colleges/schools and departments.
  2. Teach-Out Deadlines
The academic catalog for 2024-2025 does not include programs that are being discontinued, so new students cannot start these programs, even though UNCG will continue to offer some or all of the curricula in discontinued programs for several years while current students complete their degrees.

Where possible, the working group set uniform sunset dates for discontinued programs by level:
    • BA and BS programs will be discontinued at the conclusion of the Spring 2028 term. This allows students who began in Fall 2023 five years to complete their degrees (most UNCG undergraduates finish in five years).
    • Minors in these disciplines will follow the discontinuation timeline for their associated majors. · Stand-alone minors that are being discontinued have a sunset date of Spring 2027.
    • Korean language instruction has a sunset date of Spring 2025.
    • Post-baccalaureate certificate programs have a sunset date of Spring 2026.
    • Except for the joint MSN/MBA, Master’s programs will cease instruction at the end of the Spring 2026 term and have a program sunset set of May 2027. The year between the end of instruction and full discontinuation provides students time to complete the necessary clinical, studio, internship, and/or thesis work.
    • The joint MSN/MBA program has a sunset date of May 2028 to accommodate student needs.
    • The last day of instruction for discontinued doctoral programs is May 2028, with a program sunset date of May 2030, providing adequate time for students to complete research and dissertation work.
  3. Teach-Out Process
Working group team members collaborated with program leads and academic advisors to draft individual plans of study for all students in the affected programs. These plans specify the courses students need and the timeline for completion of each course. Students who have challenges in completing courses on time will be assisted in every way practicable.

Individual plans of instruction also form the basis of the list of courses departments will need to offer for each semester of the teach-out period. In most cases, elective offerings for undergraduates have been curtailed beginning Fall 2024. Departments have been asked to focus on offering required courses for their majors and minors
